Laptop dvd drive

My nieces dvd drive is making a nasty noise and not working so she says.
I am wondering if dvd drives are pretty much generic, or would it have to be specific to the model of laptop?
At this early stage I dont even know what make or model lappy it is yet.

No they are not generic ( for example you can't use DVD drive from DELL laptop in Lenovo laptop, interface is not the same). Usually you have to buy new drive that is specific to the model of laptop (but there might be a chance to find dvd drive from another model of the same manufacturer that fits)

once you know the model
look on ebay for one
look in both title and description as many sellers will list every brand/model they will fit
also once you know what other models it fits
you can the look using those other models

Thanks for the replies lads. I am going around tomorrow, and take out the drive. It could be that I see something simple with it, a floppy disc, or piece of toast stuck in there maybe.
I will take model numbers and stuff and do a Google and ebay search, like you say P.H... A quick look showed some for as little as ?15 ish.. up to ?30.
