Is it a sata or IDE connection. SATA does not use master/slave.
For IDE there is normally a jumper on the drive to set up master/slave/CS.
You mention about attaching it to a desktop, this might be tricky if its IDE as it does not use the same connector as desktops. -
ide laptop, cannot manually jumper laptop drives.would need to be attached to pc by adapter cable to change to master with software that i obtained from sony optiarc website.my post was mainly to find out if any member had any experiance of doing this task.Comment

Can you see it in bios/device manager?
Never heard of changing jumper settings but have changed a lot of drives, Master should be default no?
Quick C+P
Click the Start button
Right click My Computer
Select Manage from the resulting menu
In the Computer Management window, select Device Manager
In the right panel, click to expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Identify your CD/DVD drive in the expanded menu and right click the appropriate drive
Select Properties
In the Properties windows, click the Advanced Settings tab
In the Transfer Mode box that represents your CD/DVD drive (typically Device 1); open the dropdown menu and select PIO Only
Click ok and exit all windowsLast edited by SouthernComfort; 11 May, 2011, 22:26."What we've got here is failure to communicate."Comment

right problem sorted bought optiarc slimline dvd rom player model(ad 7540*a) from fleabay down loaded csel changer tool that corresponded with this unit, which allowed me to change it from master to slave, bought forty to fifty pin slimline cd rom ide attachment from maplins. this meant i could connect laptop dvd rom to my pc thus allowing me to change said unit to slave setting so would be recognised by toshiba laptop bios, hey presto job done. hope this may be of some help to any members who are in the same predicament.Comment
