sky plus box not working

Please help! My sky plus box has stopped working it won't switch on, checked connections etc, is there anyway I can retrieve the programs off it. I heard you might be able to do it by taking out the hard drive and connecting it to a computer.

All the recordings on the hard drive are stored as raw data. You can transfer it to a PC, but you won't be able to do anything with it as you need the smart card to decrypt it.

I'll have a look around my system, I'm sure I've got a service manual somewhere.


Ok, it's not a service manual, just the engineers screen. It's not going to help you as you can't turn the box on.

Here's a couple of things to try....

Switch the box off at the mains,
Disconnect dish input one at the back of the box
Wait 10 seconds
Reconnect dish input one
switch on at mains
(box should be back in standby)
Wait 1 minute
Press 'Sky' button on remote


or try software update procedure:

switch box off at the mains
press and hold the back up button
switch power back whilst holding the back up button
you will see the red light come on first then
after a few secs you should see all 4 lights on the front on the box and a message will appear on your screen saying

"updating system software please do not disconnect from mains supply or satellite dish this may take up to 10 mins"

after up to 10 mins box will switch back onto standby
leave it for 90 seconds then press the tv button and then the sky button on your remote control


Other possibilities include a dead hard drive or overheating.

There is a way to replace the hard drive, but it needs formatting correctly & the file system installing. The info is on-line somewhere as my dad found it when their HDD failed.

then go to setup press select
then press 0 then 1 then select button
installer setup
at the bottom there are 2 option s
do a full system restore and
system reset
DO BOTH
cant remember exactly the details as its been a while but you should be able to see from this position
it will warn you that all info will be wiped off HDD
