    Disk status bad!

    Hello all,

My PC has now developed a fault.

When I boot up I get pri master disk s.m.a.r.t is bad press del to continue which then takes me to the BIOS screen.

I presume that the HD is on it's way out.

Is there anything I can do other than replacing the HD?

Use hiren boot Cd and check hard drive status. It might be able to repair but to be honest once they go thats the end of them.

How old is the HD? You might be able to get a replacement under manufacture warranty. For example Western Digital do a 3 year warranty on theres.

Rumor has it that smearing yourself in chickens blood while reciting Ozzy lyrics may help.

Other than that you could remove the drive & see if it will work as a storage drive in a caddy.
If it does, copy everything you need onto another drive & format the troublesome drive.

It might give you a working bootable drive, it might not. Your only other option is to replace it, unless I'm missing something (like a brain, common sense, a soul, my left testicle.....)

It's under a year old and still warranteed.

I really don't want to have to send it back if I can avoid it though

If the drive is stilll detecting in windows os then get hold of 'getdataback for ntfs' presuming the drive is formatted to ntfs, and with any luck you should be able to recover most of the data. You will also need a spare drive to recover the data.

Then you can send faulty one back for replacement.

It's working ok at the moment.

if I go into BIOS change things but when exiting discard changes it boots OK.

don't need any of the data on the HD so will ring sellers tomorrow and see what's what.

            many thanks for the help

Use the manufacturers diagnostic tools to diagnose the issue. I would presume that it may need to be sent back the them for repair/replacement. Usually only takes 1-2 weeks but worth doing.
