are you saying it freezes and then after about 10 mins all is OK
could be something you have recently installed causing conflicts

try disabling all start up programs in msconfig
start the run program and in the box type msconfig
in the next box click on the Start Up tab
make a note of what is already ticked and then untick them all
restart the computer and see if the problem is still there.

could also be a bad driver, goto control panel-hardware-devices if any yell exclamation marks against an item try to update that driver.

Work PC does it a lot when starting up.

Caused by a slow arsed processor & pitiful memory. And the amount of software installed.

hi smoggy i tried this ,
The restart you suggest seems to cure the prob even though I have done nothing so it won't be a diagnostic tool in this case. The freeze occurs shortly after first startup and a shutdown is the only option. But the second startup is just the same as the first, a new startup. From then on, seemingly faultless until intentional shutdown. Suggesting that something needs to warm up? Upon first freezing, if the still moveable cursor is an arrow, clicking on anything turns this into an eggtimer and it will remain an eggtimer for as much as an hour, the longest I'm prepared to wait for whatever chuntering is going on. So the startup programs must be the same ones each time it starts, how could it be that for one start they might be problematical but not for the second start? All fans are running but no flicking red LED during the freeze. True to say that the machine is about 5 years old and likely to be worn out hard drive etc could it be a stalled hard drive?

if starting up with all start up programs unticked cures the problem then the next step is to start with a small number ticked and then adding more until you find the culprit

Not enough to help..what type of computer? Store bought or built? What software and operating system? When did it start? Try booting into safe mode to see if you have any luck there, if it freezes in safe mode, you know it's not something on the OS, I would look towards bad hardware, faulty HD, bad stick of ram...etc.

It could be a hardware issue but hardware issues normally result in a Blue Screen Of Death

A few things you could try....

Download and run ATF Cleaner from ATF-Cleaner.exe - www.atribune.org

Download and install Internet Explorer again.

Check the event logs for errors by going to the Start button, then select Run and type "eventvwr"
