how to change windows xp key...............

..........i have 2 machines, a desktop running genuine windows xp pro, and a lappy running an erroneous system. the laptop has the windows star of death, not allowing me updates etc.
can i change nthe product software key on the laptop to that of the desktop? and if so how please.
