ok folks this ones got me stuck 
cousins acer keyboard started playing up as in only the vowels would work with hyphens above them and .exe would take you to a properties windows instead of running the program,also if i right click on the desktop i would just get a white window flash then nothing
so i though possible malware or virus so done a factory reset using alt and f10
factory reset finished and windows xp was all loaded back up but with the same problems
so plugged in a usb keyboard and still the same
messed on in the bios but that made things worse to the point ive had to strip down the laptop and disconnect the cmos battery to get laptop running again
any ideas as im stuck, im starting to think motherboard problem
