have you changed the boot order in the bios so that the lappy boots to cd drive first so that you can install the operating system to the new hdd

just had another thought (~~~~ me 2 in one day) if you are trying to load the disk that came with the lappy is it a system disk or is it just a recovery disk

if the hd is brand new then it will be in a raw state and will need formatting before you can load a o/s, if you have a full instalation disc for any windows o/s then that will do it for you.

If it is XP you are trying to load, some of the early XP install disks were not bootable.
