    detecting hardware

Hi , is there a way to interogate a pc to see what sound card it has ( to load the driver ) , I ve tried windows update and dxdiag with no success .The pc is a no-name brand since its built up with used parts. Device manager flags me with a yellow question mark on multimedia audio controller ,Please advise thanks and regards
Do what you can with what you have .

Whenever i have had that problem i open the case and if the card is an expansion card then i make a note of every part number and serial number on the card and search on line for them numbers. Usually someone online has a model name and number for the serial numbers, usually in a linux group, then the problem becomes finding the correct drivers.
If the card is built into the motherboard then i do the same as above but look for model number on the motherboard. Then go to the manufacturers website and download the correct drivers.
Sometimes you can run a live Linux distro and if it correctly loads and installs drivers for your card, you can then ask the distro what card it identified.

if you right click on the audio cotroller and choose properties then the driver tab you should be able to install the driver from there by allowing the pc to search online for the driver.
