    Acer Aspire Netbook

Just wondering if anyone can help me with putting XP on the Acer Aspire One. It`s the 512 mb Ram 120 gig version, currently running Linux OS.

I have what I think is a working copy of XP and I have set the netbook to boot from a DVD external drive.

It is prompting me to delete the C: Partition to allow the install of XP. Is this OK to do, and is there a possibilty if the XP does not install properly , that I might brick the thing?

If the install did go wrong , would I be able to use the Recovery Disc to go back to Linux, bearing in mind that I have the unit set to boot from an external DVD drive?

Thanks in advance for any info , that may help me.

yes to do a fresh install of xp , yes delete c and format ntfs, and let it install if its a working copy then there should be no problems, is this your only means of internet, am not wanting you to be without if ur xp version is corrupt.

But on a lighter note i do a fresh install every month on xp, on dell laptop and a part from a few drivers all goes well all the time.

Am sure if you have got linux working on the acer then xp will be breeze in the park.

If your laptop uses a SATA hard drive then your XP disc might failed to install unless you press F2 during boot and allow it to load up your SATA drivers.

You'll know this is happening as Windows will tell you that it can't find a drive during the install.

Regardless, do yourself a favour mate and pop another gig of Ram into it.

If i was you the first thing I would do is go to the acer website and download all the drivers needed for your Laptop, even installing windows XP their will be a few drivers missing, if as you said all goes wrong, then you can restore it to factory defaults by switching it on and pressing ALT & F10 together, this will restore from a hidden partition setup by ACER, PS providing you have not FDISKED the hole drive.

why would ur ram be lacking not sure on minium ram required to run xp but am sure its 256 nothing bigger.

And as hopper28 said before u do anything stick all ur drivers on disk, get them all from acer site, or if you have another pc then you will be ok as easily downloaded on that, if your isp limits your downloads, no point downloading all if not all needed and xp see's after format

minimum ram for running xp is 64mb so 512 is plenty as long as your netbook has a decnt cpu, the only thing I would suggest m8 is make sure Acer provide drivers and empowering technology for all buttons and hardware devices on the netbook for windows xp. check by going here

Have you ever tried running XP on 64mb of RAM, or even 128MB or 256Mb for that matter?

                It's horrible.

512Mb is fine as long as you're not going to do too many things the same time but as soon as you open 2 or more apps the system starts paging like hell resulting in very poor performance.

If he has onboard GFX which shares the system RAM then matters get worse.

?15 will buy 1Gb of RAM these days and it makes a huge difference in system performance.

though I do understand that ram is cheap nowadays and you are always better having more

that maybe the case, but the guy is running a netbook not a gaming laptop, 512 ram runs xp fine for surfing the net ane word processing etc......... hough I do understand that ram is cheap nowadays and you are always better having more was just letting him know you could run it on 512

Linux to XP on Aspire One, just done it!

Was wondering the same myself, but just done it and all is well!

                    My model was a AOA150ab, now it's a AOA150bb
                    (120GB HDD; 1GB; N270 etc etc)

Used an ext' USB DVD-drive to load a copy of XP-pro after changing the boot order!

all loaded OK, got certain drivers from the Acer Aspire website using another PC! as I couldn't get the LAN or WLAN to work after loading the XP, once drivers installed from Acer and XP disc, rebooted a few times, all eventually OK!

I was going to try the USB-flash drive method, bit was a right ball-acher, so bought a new DVD-drive from Tesco's (28days return policy) loaded all I needed to load onto it, then took the DVD back for a full refund!
