    have you got a router?
easiest way would be to hook both comps up to it and use an ftp proggy to transfer data acroos. other than this, you could burn a dvd and then stick it in the laptop.
or use a usb thumb drive to transfer the data

      What an ft proggy ??

I can do it wireless over the router, but she's got about 60 gig of music, photo's etc, which will take days, i was hoping if i did it with a cable it would be much quicker ??

man whats the data rate on serial? that would take forever!
if you've not got a thumb drive may i suggest buying a pack of dvd-rws and burning a few data discs?
i still think ftp is gonna be the way forward

i wouldn't buy a null modem cable to transfer data.
using 2 ethernet cables, hook up both comps to a router. then use something like flashfxp to transfer the data

its what you normally flash a box with it connects to your com port on your pc but you can get them with usb on one end, maplins have them as to wether it would be quicker and it would be more complicated,id do it with a flash drive you can get them up to about 14gb less hassle.

looking for the least technical and cheapest option? get a pack of 10 dvd-rws and transfer data that way

no probs buddy. if you are gonna be transferring data regularly though, id invest in a usb hdd. u can get a 160gb from argos for under ?50
Buy Philips 160GB Black Multimedia Extenal Hard Disk Drive. at Argos.co.uk

RJ45 (ethernet lead). Set up home network (wired 100Mbps transfer).
                              Easy does it
