    Windows 7 help please.

Son downloaded a critical update on his win7 pc today, on reboot the pc boots to repair console, it will do nothing else! I've tried booting from repair disc(no luck) booting from win7 disc(no luck) cant boot to safe mode, only the repair console. Tried a sys restore from repair console, and it states successful, but again on reboot its back into repair console again, anyone offer any advice please, he needs this pc for his uni work.

Best advice already given. Format & start again.

How many HDD's are there in the computer? Or was a single drive set up with a document partition?

Save what you can before formatting. Use a caddy if needed.

I have had simular problems recently, all down to the wonderful Rootkits.

                        Id suggest using:

                        Hiren's BootCD 14.1 - All in one Bootable CD ? www.hiren.info

Hirens boot cd, goto windows, run gmer look for anything in red and run some of the other av's. Im not sure what else is on the disk from memory, but this is the one CD, I always keep to hand

I would have tried this first then hiren's:

How to use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows

I have had success with the above on 2 machines.
