2nd Hard drive problems

Hi all
can anyone help me out? I have fitted a second hard drive in my desk top (HP Pavillion a310.uk). I followed advice from other site members, but now I am having problems. I can find the new hard drive in "my computer" but when I right click to format it a message comes up saying "insert disc into drive".
It is now really annoying me. I am pretty sure I have the jumpers set right,

Original hard drivi is still on "cable select
2nd hard drive is on "device 1 slave"

any help would be appreciated, or the number of a glazier.....

change your main drive to master, and the new one to slave

These are the jumper options I have

Primary hard drive - Seagate ST 380011A - 80 Gig
position 1 Master on / Slave off
Position 2 Cable select
position 3 Limit drive capacity to32 Gig

SECOND HARD DRIVE - Hitachi Deskstar 320 Gig
There are 2 options for jumper settings - 16 heads or 32 Gig clip
Each option has a further 4 options
position 1 Device 0 (master)
position 2 Device 1 (slave)
position 3 cable select
position 4 Forcing device 1 present


Any help would be greatly appreciated

please read the options I typed in my post then advise exactly which options to select.

I did find another option on web site;
"master with non ata compatible slave"
but need another jumper plug for this option, please advise.

the 80 was the original hard drive & has all the operating system on it, do not know how to transfer it over so thought it would be easier to just add a larger second hard drive & then store everything else on that, leaving more space on the primary hard drive to run the operating system, please advise if anything else would be better.

Personally i would partition the 320gb into 2 drives of 160gb then do a clean install of windows on one of the new 160gbs and use the 80gb and the remaining 160gb for storage.

Still unable to access the second hard drive

still cannot access the second hard drive, when I select drive in "my computer & select format message says no disc in drive, insert disc & try again.
looked in admin tools, computer management, disc management.
original hard drive is highlited blue as primary partition.
new second drive is highlited black - un allocated.

Start the computer.
Step2 Enter the CMOS setup program (the system generally indicates which key to press), immediately after memory check.
Step3 Use arrow keys to select Autodetect option (or comparable option for your computer) if it is available, and press Enter. If this option is not available, see step 5 to manually enter the drive parameters.
Step4 In the Autodetect screen, enter Y to select the default settings for each drive that is installed and bypass settings for uninstalled drives. The screen will return to the main setup screen. Continue to step 8.
Step5 To manually enter drive parameters, select the setup screen that displays hard drive parameters (usually Standard or Main screen).
Step6 Use the arrow keys to scroll through the list of drive parameters.
Step7 Select the set of parameters that most closely represents your drive and does not exceed the drive volume (such as 2 GB) and press Enter.
Step8 Press Enter or OK (or Esc if the other keys are not available) to accept the new setting.
Step9 Use arrow keys to select Save and Exit setup and press Enter. The computer restarts, indicating the presence of the second drive. Your drive is ready.

did as instructed, pc re-started, right click drive in "my computer" selected "format" got following message "No disc in drive. Insert disc & try again"

dodgy drive perhaps?
try setting the new drive to cable select and installing that drive only, then do a fresh install of windows onto it

this may sound a silly question but are they both pata drives set on the same ide channel on your pc 1 as master the 2 as slave because i cant understand why its asking you to insert disc when in hd managment and you try to format the drive, again a silly question its not showing as a removable disc drive is it ?

Hi,
you can try this:

1. Go to Control panel
2. Go to Administrative tools
3. Go to Computer management
4. Go to Disk management
5. Delete all partitions that you have on your new disk
6. Create new partition on new disk
7. Format this new partition using NTFS file system

YES IT SAYS REMOVEABLE DISC

Yes it saying it is a removeable disc, does that shed any light on my problems??????
