      try this
Go to Start > Run, type diskmgmt.msc and press Enter. In the left column of the Graphical View where it states the Disk number, right-click the device > Properties > Policies Tab. Put a check mark in "Optimize for performance" and “Enable write…..”.

going back to my question about it being on the same ide channel you have to connect them both with the same cable, there should a plug part way along the cable that your origonal hd uses this gives you the master and slave set up if not you need to get hold of another cable.
you say it shows as a removable disc this sounds as if you have put on you ide channel with your cd rom.

          Finally done

Not to sure how, but it's finally done, had to have jumpers on both hard drives on cable select, don't know if this is specific to HP, logged on as admin, went through to disk management, scan for disks, created a partition & then formatted. What a right royal pain in the arse????????????????

BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THERE HELP
