My PC has lost the copy/paste facility it will copy a file but 'paste' remains greyed out...its as if no data has gone to the clipboard...also pc has lost all restore points...could be a bug..anyone else got this or heard of it ??

I havent heard of it before but you could try a couple of things to start the troubleshooting process off...
1). Click start -> Run -> type in "Cmd"
a new window will appear.. then type in the following..
"chkdsk /f" but without the " and Hit enter
This will check your drive & files for any errors during the next reboot.
2). failing that if you have a windows xp disc to hand type in the following...
Click Start -> Run -> now type "SFC/ Scannow" again without the " and hit enter. this will scan & replace any corrupt or missing windows system files on your system.
if that doesnt work stick another post back in here & we can try something else.

Could not run chksk from run as disc format is ntfs...however I had already run it via windows disc restore console...several errors were fixed...it was after this that I started getting the above. The outset of all this is that the PC started behaving badly with blue screens and such...that is why I ran the chkdsk...now I have above problems and after being left on for a a few hours it just shuts down as if you have pulled the power plug...then starts ok when rebooted...I ran scannow which executed with no messages or feedback but the copy paste prob is still there..Comment

Try copy and then when you want to paste hold ctrl and press v. See if that works.Sometimes a slow gradual approach does more good than a large gesture.Comment

Click Start > Run…
Type “regedit.exe” and press OK.
Get to the following location in the registry: -
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
In the pane on the right-hand side of regedit you should see a String called “AppInit_DLLs” with a value of “pushow**.dll” where ** is some random number.
Right-click on this String and click Delete.
Click Start > Run…
Type “C:\windows\system32\” and press OK.
Click on the Search toolbar button in the explorer window that just appeared.
Click “All files and folders” on the search panel that has appeared on the left hand side of the window.
Where it says “All or part of the file name:” enter “pushow*.dll” and click Search.
Once the search has finished select the pushow**.dll file (there will be multiple copies if you ran the setup file more than once). Delete the file or files.Comment

tried this...no value was set in the appInt_dll data field....also when trying to search for anything in explorer the left hand panel is totally blank....in other words I cannot search for files as well as no copy paste facility....Comment

To me sounds like the explorer shell has been corrupted some how, ensuring that you have no viruses ect.
Your best options are really is a restore or a format and a clean instal of windows.
You could try changing the explorer shell or re-installing it off of the windows.
There will be info on this on google but the options above are the only 1s i can think of..sigpic
