do you have a vga connection on your laptop to connect to a external monitor, if you can and get a picture then it could be your laptop screen if not then it sounds like a graphics problem on your laptop.

Try booting up in safe mode a few times see if the picture comes up every time. SAFE MODE press F8 on start up

You say that eventually it will boot up, yes? Only a suggestion mate but you could wait for it to boot then when you finally get it to, Go to sony's site and download and re-install the gfx drivers for your particular model viao. Hope this helps.

so when its booting up are you getting the bios screen and the windows splash screen and then it goes blank or is the screen blank as soon as you turn it on?

i take it the laptop is more than 12months so there no chance of returning it, if at some point you can get a picture on the screen try reloading the graphic drivers otherwise with the graphics been onboard i think you may have to get a new mobo.

Well its not a driver problem, if you can hear and see the lights and it boots into windows without screen then its the screen that is faulty, buy a new laptop would work out cheaper, if the powerlight comes on and no hard drive then it might be a ram problem take it for repair.

Could be the inverter on the lcd screen which cost about ?10 to replace.
