Try and find someone else who has an ext disc drive mate, I had a prolem booting xp off an ext cd drive but I have 2 of them. When I tried the other one it booted no problem.

No honest bud I have had the same problem too with one of my drives but when I used the other one it was fine. Is the drive showing up when you go to choose boot device? It was on mine but I just wasn't getting anything like you say, But when I tried the other one it was fine. Try another ext cd drive first to save messing about.

what xp version are you trying to load? before service pack 1, xp takes control of the usb ports and the loader cant read them. its bizarre but true. try getting an xp disc with service pack 2 integrated

If you install XP onto a hard drive which is connected to a different machine at the time of installation then don't be surprised if the Laptop crashes once you install the drive into it.

During installation XP setups a lot of hardware, swapping the drive into another PC will mean that the setup is invalid and the PC may crash during boot.

Sometimes you can be lucky and it will boot, then it's just a matter of installing appropriate drivers for your hardware.
