opening a new window

i have done something to my desktop but don't know what.
when i open a program it opens like a small letter box and then i have to max it or drag it to the top of the screen.i don't want it the full screen size so i drag the corner to make it the size i want but when i go off it the come back it goes back to the letter box again.
help please.

Right click on the taskbar at the bottom (where Start, Time, etc is) and see if you have selected Tile Vertically or Tile Horizontally....then select untile

that seem to be as it should be.it is only when i open some programs and not on them all.
