Windows root, system32hal.dll Start up message

I have this coming up on my mums computer: Windows root system32 hal. dll.

"Please re-install a copy of the above file"

The problem is, which I have read is that I don't have a boot up xp cd, which I've read you need!

How do I fix this? Mum is doing my head in!

you need to try some of the things it suggests
ie try a system restore
if you click on the highlighted blue print it will take you to a link explaining how to do it etc.

The problem is I can't get into xp it is just a black screen! Tried pressing f12 for boots menu, but not much there. No option for "safe mode" etc

don't know what your computer uses but try other keys like F8 or F2 etc
if you can't get to safe mode then I think your only option is a XP CD

I don't have an XP cd, my uncle gave me the lappy. Rung friends they all have Vista.

Laptop was working fine! My mum uses it, can't I just copy data onto CD to insert? The only options I have got at the start up is "set up menus F2" and "boot menu F12"??

Does it still have the factory default option dont no what laptop you have but it should be there unless its been wiped.Mines alt f10 on start up but there are other options depending on your lappy..............

Thanks for the reply guys..but I have given it into my local pc repair guy..he is going to charge me 40 pounds..and said he will put on a licensed AVg anti-virus so it will not happen again??

Maybe I could have fixed it myself but the information was so hard to find on google and no my mum's lappy doesn't work with the button key you have mentioned?!

I hope the guy fixes it properly
