Also known as Click of Death.

Back Up everything now, as you'll be pulling the plug soon

The noise is generated because of rapid head movement mostly during recalibration sequences but occasionally also during normal read/write events. The click itself is the head being driven into one of the end stops.

Although not an issue in itself (the heads are designed to be able to repeatedly hit the end stops as part of normal function) it can be a sign that the drive is excessively recalibraing after error reads. This can point to carriage wear, head deterioration or platter age.

As well as fully backing up the drive, i'd recommend you run a program which does a full surface check and status diagnosis (most HDD drive manufacturers have such tools on there websites although you may have to look quite carefully). If the drive passes all the tests then I wouldn't be unduly worried although prudence would suggest you do regular full backups (you should do these anyway).

btw, I have a drive that goes through a 30 second 'clicking' cycle every 15 minutes or so. It initially worried me but tech support at Seagate said it was perfecly normal operation. Its been running fine now for 3+ years, clicking away to itself.
