webpage fills entire screen cannot shift

    hello all,
i have a friend who has brought me his pc with a very interesting problem, on boot up it automatically opens up a webpage which you cannot prevent and envelopes the whole screen. there appears to be no way to shut it down and therefore no way to access anything else on the computer. ive tried opening task manager but it just hides itself behind the page and F11 does nothing. i have pressed every button on the keyboard to try and minimize it but nothing. he would like to avoid a factory reset to avoid losing things so any suggestions as to how this might be resolved another way would be great.
i have also tried opening it up in safe mode but it just hangs and eventually boots normally. he has recently had avg installed by a friend and says this is when his problems started.

If possible, take out the hard drive and put it in another computer (Or use an external HDD dock or USB case) with good anti virus/anti trojan software on it! Scan the friends HDD FULLY then use the remove AVG utility on that drive. Do another quick scan for anything else and try it back in the origonal PC....

You could try booting into safe mode then running anti virus to try to eradicate the problem.

I don't think he can boot into safe mode from what he says in his post...
