going from vista to xp are we?
Check for a Bios option to set the drives to 'IDE' or any option without the word 'Raid' in it.

Try formatting it to FAT32 in another machine. FDISK first, then delete partition, then create partition, then format.

What is the make & model number of this PC? If you can provide this we can check the spec and give you the answer you need..

              IDE.

Check BIOS and make sure drive is showing there. Could be an ID issue.

              Sata.

Have drivers on floppy disk to hand and press F6 when instructed to "add third party drivers", Pop floppy in and setup should pick up the drivers then the harddrive.

(Alternative is to grab nLite (google) and "slip stream" the drivers into your install, removing to the need to add drivers during setup)

              Overall

Best thing i find, is to grab nLite, Go to motherboard manafacturers website and download ALL the drivers for your board. Then have nLite add them all to your windows installation. Can even add any service packs missing to, saving you time later on.
