I just didn't want him to get a shop involved unless it was necessary. It might be too late already

i've just let a laptop running for 12 hours running a fix as no other drive avail with very similar problem to this and its so easy to fix!!!

Just a chkdsk /r in either restore console or safe mode with cmd prompt SHOULD fix this problem.

After that then a system restore will do the trick, (personally i would have formatted and reinstalled)

Because you can boot into safe mode tells me that the main system to get there (cpu mb and ram is ok) can only be software or hdd related.
