        here do this
        1. Type in cmd in the Start Search box
        2. Right click on cmd.exe that shows up and choose Run as Administrator
        3. Run chkdsk command on the faulting drive

Type this in CMD with the spaces

        chkdsk /F /R /X F:

        sit and wait

on the end of that command line change the letter F to the letter of hdd u want to check

Go to the HHD manufacturers website and download their utility. Preferably the bootable ISO not the windows version.

                bad sectors

You should never recover bad sectors on a HDD. The reason they have been flagged bad is because the internal checks done by the disc controller have already tried to recover them and a threshold has been reached so its flagged bad. If you need to recover data then that's a different story but excessive bad sectors indicates a disk waving goodbye. best replace it as the software like hirens may well recover the flagged defective ones as the recovery is more aggressive BUT you may be lining yourself up for a disk crash.

All disks have dodgy areas as it would cost too much to manufacture a perfect disk (or as near) That's why they allocate a reserved area of free space so when a sector is deemed bad it flags it as so and writes the data to a spare sector.

                Hope this helps
