at the moment i need the cheapest option,,,i do have an old external hdd that ~~~~ed up last year and i lost 60gb of important data,,,bloke in the shop advised me to back any important stuff to disc for safety wish i would of listened to his valuable advice and i wouldnt be back in the same situation as before
anyway i could take out the hdd from my lappy and put it in the caddy and then could i just plug that into this win 7 lappy im using ?
and what should i see once plugged in ? all of my data etc or a hdd in recovery ? will it be straightforward or should i just stick to the hirens method ?
off to work will check msgs on my phone and then get back on the case this evening
              thanks for advice peeps

Sorry, I don't quite follow you. You have an old hard drive and you want to swap the harddrives round?

As for backups Dropbox is a good tool depending on volumes or even usb pens there really cheap these days for backing up.

Right so new hdd in install windows and plug the other one in, you shouldn't need Hirens if your doing it that way the other hdd will just be under a different letter. Assuming I follow you correctly now.

I must admit im a big fan of Hirens disk but ive just come across Activedisc im giving that a go at the mo,

I'd have downloaded a copy if win xp and tried repair console. In that choose your instal.

                        Type chkdsk /r

Will take a while but should sort it.

Failling that. Instal the copy of xp with your serial. Don't format the hdd just instal. You should be able to recover your files from the windows old folder.

Another option is to instal an os to an external or place the laptop hdd into a hdd caddy and pull data off it that way.

Once you have your files you can run the recovery discs
