Its unusual for safe mode not to work unless your PC has some form of hardware problem. From what you say its possible you've had some kind of disk error which has resulted in something crucial being corrupted. Unfortunately, there's really not too much option in this circumstance but to reload windows, preferably on another HDD. Booting into the windows install cd and using the repair option may fix the problem but it may also make things worse (especially if files are cross-linked).
So, if you have an old HDD (from above it appears you do) then remove your present one entirely for now and install the old one. At this point i'd probably run a low-level disk checker to confirm there's nothing seriously wrong with the old disk. If its had a head crash the you may as well discard it at this point as chances are it will simply become more and more damaged quite rapidly. I thik Hirens boot does disk checks but if not you can usually download tools from the drive manufacturers website.
If the old HDD passes, the proceed to do a new windows install to get your pc back to a working state. Once you've accomplished that then you can attempt what was suggested above and use an external USB caddy. You should be able to just plug that in as a usb device to get access to your drives data assuming that the drive is still functional.
if the drive isn't functional then i'm afraid your into the realms of specialist recovery (pretty expensive) or biting the bullet and writing off your data.
I know you've probably already learnt the lesson but just to re-iterate - BACKUPS OF IMPORTANT DATA IS ESSENTIAL. A first line (and a very simple one) is a USB stick. With 16Gb sticks only costing ?15 these days there's really no excuse. Plug it in, copy files, job done !. For longer term backup write DVD's - time consuming but worth the effort. This is especially useful to backup your system files as you can create a disk-set which includes all your applications. This can save hours of re-installation. Online 'vaults' can also be useful for backing up important data. ISP's etc often give away a few Gb of online dataspace for this purpose. Make sure you encrypt stuff you vault though - you never know who may have access.Comment

Mate. Put it back in the lappy. Download a version of winxp and run the recovery console and use the chkdsk /r command. Your file system sounds a little outta whack.
The other options, instal win xp on the drive but dont format will work.
If you did format. I have a good recovery program here for recovering filessigpic

get it back in that caddy
here do this
- Type in cmd in the Start Search box
- Right click on cmd.exe that shows up and choose Run as Administrator
- Run chkdsk command on the faulting drive
Type this in CMD with the spaces
chkdsk /F /R /X F:
sit and wait
F is only on the end of the command line because of the drive letter that it has been given if this changes when u plug it in next change the letter on the end of the command line
This should fix ur error
let me knowLast edited by Cod3waX; 13 February, 2012, 21:27.Comment

That is kinda the route i was going to take if a copy of xp cant be located fast. The reason i asked about winxp as its a easier option than hirens.
Mini xp should allow you to pull your files from the hdd depending on the state its in
You could keep it in the caddy and do it cod's way also. Either way a full chkdsk needs to be ran.sigpic
