        it must be really ****ed to be taking that long just let it finish cant do anything else untill thats done im afraid

        when done it should be able to be seen in my computer from ur sons laptop if thats the case then put it back into ur laptop and try boot it up

          it seems to be stuck and not doing a thing,,its 62% complete but its doing nothing and theres a funny noise coming from the caddy#not sure what to do ?

            Leave it. What's the noise? Clicking? If its taking so long the file system really is ~~~~ed. It could be that ~~~~ed that a full low level format maybe required.

              the noise is hard to explain,,its like a whirring noise the sort you get when the lappy is booting up
              but its not counting up through the file numbers like is was last night
              my mate has a copy of all my pics so thats ok,but there is other data on here i need if poss
              if its stuck then what ?

                I'd still leave it then. If it was a clicking noise would indicate a bearing or head that's ~~~~ed

                  someone shut the lid on the lappy which in turn shut thelappy down,,its started up again and the check disc box is still open with a flashing cursor in the bottom but its done nothing for the last half hour,,is there anyway i can get check disc to continue ?

                      Run hiren boot cd. see if it boots into xp from there. Sort it there and then.

                          Ok checksisk was stuck so had to unplug caddy
                          I have put the hdd into lappy abd got a copy of xp boot cd
                          It booted up from cd but not sure which command to run

                            mabie not normal, but not abnormal....
                            did tell you's the chkdsk would take forever if there were indeed errors or problems.
