    win7 to xp

b in law bought toshiba sat pro c660d with win 7 home prem 64bit on,he cant get on with it(set in his ways) and asked me to put xp on when i try to load xp and all preinstall files are loaded a blue screen comes up and prevents me from going further,i put win xp virtual on but it is very jerky,my q. is is it the m/b preventing xp being installed or the hard drive,if i were to take the hdd out(keep for future reinstal) and put a new hdd in would this work,if it is the m/b is there a work around as already stated win xp virtual is a no go regards

you may have to use Hirens boot cd to format the hd before installing xp, the other thing to consider is depending on how old the pc is as to whether you can get xp drivers to run the hardware.

Windows XP pro will not use ACHI mode if it detects it when installaing. As long as ACHI is turned off when you are installing windows xp it will be ok. But you can turn it on after installing windows xp with a simple registry and driver change.

The problem could have come from the restore partition on the hard drive.

Most new laptops have a hidden (although not always hidden) partition on the hard drive that has all the drivers and restore data. When you run a windows setup, ether Windows 7 or Windows xp, it will look for any restore data and try and use it, obviously a windows xp setup disk can't use a windows 7 restore data so will fail.

Also windows 7 itself makes a small hidden partition of about 100mb when you install it, this has the boot data info.

In order to go backwards both these partitions need removing.

Ether putting a new hard drive in or using hirens to delete all partitions should do the trick.
