Links don't open on the browser

Can someone tell me how to get over this problem of hyperlinks not automatically opening the browser and to the webpage. I have checked the file association and changed it to different browser but nothing happens. Everytime I click on a link the dialogue for association opens and I have to select the browser to open the link.

This sounds like a classic sign of a malware infection, have you scanned recently for nasties?

Thanks for your reply m8. I have been through that scenario and my machine is very well protected including root kits etc. I have more than one type of internet browser on my machine and it does not matter which one is set as the default. Does anybody know any registry settings for browsers which I can check.
