USB Memory Stick "Read Only State: Yes"

    Hi Folks,

I need to fix my USB stick that's got it's knickers in a twist.

The issue is that my O/S (windows, osx and Ubuntu) all say the USB Stick is in read only state.

When I check the settings I've notice that READ ONLY is set to No. However the "Read Only State:" is equal to yes.

I cannot find out for the life of my how to change it back to 'no'

Anyone got any smart ideas ??

Have been playing around with DISKPART but without success and also disk utility (osx) and Ubuntu are not interested in formatting or doing anything with the drive.

It does, however, show up on all 3 OS's

    Many thanks

    TK

Sounding like it's ~~~~ed mate sorry....is it a new one (chinese) or have you pulled it out pc while it's been reading or writing (still mounted) there have been quite a few chinese ones been doing this of late but removing it while still mounted can have the same effect. There are few good disc utilities in hirens boot disc they may be able nuke it and remove any errors but the last few that have been on here with this problem haven't had any luck.

          Both

Generic usb driver (unbranded) and pulled it out when it got stuck doing a format in DISK PART as it wouldn't format in NTFS.

I did manage it with the DOS Convert command. However, it still produced errors when I copied files onto it.

Gonna get a Scandisk Cruzer and try that instead.

Thanks again for your help / info.

This is how to solve the problem.
It's a bit convaluted and you need to run it on an XP machine.
However, it's basically reloading the firmware on the USB stick.

              USB partition manager

Het guys, I am a newbie here, just tuning in now. I have used a small program called Swissknife to reformat a few usb sticks I thought may be knackered. Glad you are sorted mate, just a heads up for anyone else.

Did it from the webtools provided by a link in ChipGenius v4 (note v3 gives duff information)

Managed to reflash but went from 32gb to 4gb

Oh well, better than nothing and not bad for a first stab.

Hope you have better luck !

                :-)
