NTLDR missing.............

The psu went changed it i now have NTLDR missing wont boot is it recoverable from this or am i looking at a fresh install any pointers would be good................

sounds like you have no bootable device

ensure your hdd leads are fully home and check the bios to ensure the hdd is seen by the bios

your hdd needs a bootable partition and ntldr is a common error when no bootable os is seen

one old method of achieving this error message is when people used to leave a data floppy disk in the floppy drive

As ramjet stated, check the drive and make sure it's seen in BIOS utility.

If that's ok, you can boot from a floppy with boot.ini, NTDETECT.COM and NTLDR on it and replace the corrupted file. You can get these from another XP machine or dl the attached file. You may have to edit boot.ini if your windows install is not on first drive, first partition.

Thanx lads no floppy on this though so i guess r wipe it but i will have play first...................

You can also use a live linux CD or bootable USB and replace NTLDR. Or you can boot from an XP disc and go into repair prompt and copy from cd.


Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

Thanx again lads all sorted a school boy error on my part but tell anyone i knocked the ide off the c drive when changing the psu what a plum................

thats why I mentioned checking the hdd leads were fully home (connected and all the way into the sockets) and to double check by checking the hdd was "seen" in the bios too
