Remove the battery, plug in ac power and switch on.
    Does it power up?

hehe reminded me of something. Was working in a repair shop a few months back and a guy came in with almost the same statement. I put a socket on the counter and said almost the same as what you said. He looked at me stupid. I said you can either do it now for free or put ?15 on the counter and I will do it. He put ?15 on the counter and gave me the bag smiling. I put the money in my pocket and said if it don't work you can have it back. Easiest ?15 I've ever made

Also back on topic, Try plugging it into an external monitor and see if theres any VGA output from the spare socket. Would point to a screen issue if there is, But try what cunny said first. Seen Battries do all sorts of funky stuff.

Do all the fans inside the laptop kick in?
I have never used a laptop like that but i assume it would do it automaically

The fans normally start when the temperature gets to a certain heat. There will be a fan at the side and a fan on the bottom underneath the cpu.

Thats what is on my 2 laptops...

i have seen this problem on various laptops.
a hard reset may be needed..... unplug and take out the battery for a couple of mins. plug it all back in and press and hold the power button for at least 25 seconds all should be ok.
does the laptop do the same when you turn it on without the power adaptor?
if the lappy does nothing then the battery isn't charging so its the adaptor.
some laptops will look like there charging lights come on ect but the adaptor is not kicking enough power out to actually charge and power the lappy.

Being a Sony I reckon the motherboard is goosed and the chances of mending it are slim.

                        Hi
I work in IT enviroment and seen this problem before, pointing towards a mother board failure.

This sounds like motherboard/power supply failure here, had this a few times, hence asking about the fans mainly wanting to know about the cpu heat sink as this would power straight up if the lappy had life.
If there no life there then its pointing towards power/motherboard.
