if you take out the new memory and return it to its original state does it still do this?

If it still does it with the new memory out, i'd replace the new memory then use your windows setup cd, go into the recovery console and use the chkdsk /r command and this will check the hard drive for errors.

After a while when its finished, reboot and see if it still happens.

Let us know how you get on with these steps.

If you carry on to struggle just give me a shout an we'll crack it for you, either thread or via a pm

By any chance are you getting a BSOD? (blue screen of death/blue flash) when the windows xp logo appears, just before the reboot?
