in the device manager nothing has an exclamation apart from a unknown USD portas i said in my earlier post about a faulty psu causing my pc to freeze, i see you are using a gigabyte board which has the following features in the bios
System voltage detection
CPU/System temperature detection
CPU/System fan speed detection
CPU overheating warning
CPU/System fan fail warning
CPU fan speed control
the board in mine is a gigabyte board using similar features in mine i noted that there was a failure with the system voltage this was the cause of mine to freeze.
could this be it?Comment

two new points I would like to make,
I have realized that if I leave it for around 10 minutes after turning on the computer it seems to work for much longer before freezing,
DOES THIS GIVE US ANY CLUE?
the second, having a look through the BIOS I came across a setting called: HPETMODE: which is set in 32bit
I have windows 7 pro 64 bit,
would this be why?Comment

I still think its a cooling isssue. On the motherboard cd there will be apps for monitoring voltage, temps ect. I suggest installing them and seeing whats going on. If you can find the cd they will be avail from boards homepagesigpic

You still need to diagnose whether or not the hard drive is faulty because all the symptoms you've stated point to that! Assuming you've cleared all temp files temp internet files, scan disc & defrag. Try some hdd check & repair pragrams found on hirens boot disc or similar. I have had several Hard drives pack up in less than one yearComment

Let's start with the simple, software errors first. We can move onto hardware if needed.
A few things to try:-
Boot up in safe mode, see if it still crashes after using it for a while.
If all is ok in safe mode, run msconfig and disable everything from startup., see if the crash continues.
Check event viewer straight after a crash, see if it lists anything.
Keep us posted.Comment

A simple format and reinstal would do the above. However, i would doubt it to be software related. Everything pointed to overheating issue. If all heat sinks have been cleaned, maybe a repaste of CPU has been tried then i would suggest looking at hard drive and doing some tests on that.
Hence try changing the SATA cable, run hdd mfr tests see if all comes back clear.sigpic

I agree mate but the reason I advised what I did is, if you format and it is a driver/software error, the chances are it will just happen again upon installing the culprit.
Better to find out what is causing it if possible.
He can almost rule out software anyways if it still crashes in safe mode.Comment
