      A few things to try:-

Boot up in safe mode, see if it still crashes after using it for a while.

If all is ok in safe mode, run msconfig and disable everything from startup., see if the crash continues.

Check event viewer straight after a crash, see if it lists anything.

      Keep us posted.
      thanks,
this makes sense, how do I get to event viewer after?

If you took RAM out and it's fine then you have a defective RAM module. Try running one of the free utilities to check it like Memtest then just replace the faulty module.

you will never believe this I am stuck again

                  bought a 4GB RAM

put it in the slot which had the faulty ram module

                  computer freezes again

I took the working 2gb ram stick and replaced it with the 4GB ram stick

                  froze again

its like it will only work on one 2gb ram stick on the left hand side and nothing in the other one

anyone got any suggestions? this is a nightmare

Have you checked for bios updates?

Strange tbh i would have thought faulty ram/slot would have given BSOD not froze.

Another thing to do is run memtest from hirens
                            sigpic

                                matched pairs

In the old days RAM had to be matched pairs in order to work and I've seen on newer mBoards that different speeds and size (RAM value) don't work well together. On some off the wall brands it will even freeze and give you other intermittent problems.
