Desktop ready for the big scrappy in the sky

I've got an old desktop pc which very rarely gets used. It's only used to burn xbox games on and for the Rs232 port if i need one.
I haven't used it for a few months now but i turned it on yesterday and it wouldn't boot up. I was getting an error loading windows which has happened a few times in the past so i decided to reinstall windows7 as i have done in the past.

When i tried to reformat the disc it was saying Windows could not reformat the disc, errors, etc etc. so i tried installing windows vista and xp but it was the same. I tried using fdisk and killdisk but nothing was working so i tried 2 other spare hard drives i had and i couldn't install on them either.

Today i took everything out except for one stick of 256 ram, the HD and the cdrom and tried again, this time when i got to the stage where you boot from cdrom it started loading windows files then when the status bar got to around halfway the monitor turned itself off. I tried it a few times and either the monitor turned off or the pc itself did.

Anyway upto now i have tried using 2 different sticks of memory one at a time in different slots and 4 different hard drives and 4 different ide cables. It's been a long long time since i messed around with pc's and i've already ran out of ideas and things to try so can anyone suggest anything else i can try?
The only thing i haven't tried yet is a different graphics card. It's got onboard graphics but i haven't got any other cards lying around.
Typical because only a few weeks ago i binned loads of old parts that were just lying around doing nothing. Graphic cards, memory, cdroms dvd burners etc

    THE TRUTH
    The Hillsborough Independent Panel. 12/09/12

Today's report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster.
The panel has quite simply found 'no evidence' in support of allegations of 'exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans' and 'no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium' and 'no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying'.

Well have you reset the bios by removing the battery from the motherboard for 10 mins or so and replacing it?

          Dead Battery

If your CMOS battery is dead (it happens) you need to replace it (Cheap) and remember to reset the date in the BIOS as you will not be able to install any thing with the wrong date (it's an updating thing).
