    Network Cable Not Connected

    Hi all,

    I have a Compaq D51c Minitower desktop. It was working fine until the onboard NIC stopped working. I have bought a PCI Ethernet Adaptor and installed the driver. Disabled onboard NIC from the Bios too.

    But each time I connect it to the router, it says Network Cable unplugged. I have check for conflicts and also checked the bus settings in bios (IRQ5 - also tried other ones) but still no luck.

    on doing ipconfig /all it says media is disconnected.

    The wifi however works fine.. I have also tested the ethernet cable with a laptop and it works fine and rules out the Wireless Modem issue..

    Please can someone suggest what i can do?

    Regards

    Have you checked in control panel that the drivers for your new NIC are installed and working?

          I am using Windows 7 Home Edition.

          Have checked all the drivers and they are ok, the NIC does not light up.

          Yes, I have connected the Ethernet cable !

            It sounds more like your ethernet cable problem than your NIC mate..

            Try using different cable.

              Try to follow ad literam:
              1. right click on my computer (with the mouse) -> Proprieties
              2. click Device Manager
              3. search for Network adapters and click on the |> in front of it.
              4. is your NEW adapter listed here?

              > YES
              5. is it marked with ! ?

              >>> YES
              6. reinstall the drivers

              >>> NO
              6. close the Device Manager window and click on All Control Panel Items (on the address bar of the window open)
              7. go to Network and Sharing Center -> Change adapter settings.
              8. on the 3rd row on the right from each icon you see the adaptor that the connection is on. Find your NEW adaptor and right click on the icon and select Enable - if you don't have Enable, click on Status. Come back to us with the results. <<<<<<<<<<<<<

              > NO
              5.1. You didn't insert the adapter properly. Remove-it and reinsert it firmly into the PCI slot. The "pins" should be seen at the same hight across the card. >> OR <<
              5.2. The adaptor is broken, get it replaced.

              Good luck

                  Crossover Cable?

                  Sounds like a Crossover Cable, have you checked that?

                    You should confirm if you tried a different ethernet cable or not.

                      The on board NIC goes faulty, then a replacement doesn't work, maybe you need to reinstall windows with the original NIC and see what happens?

                        Had exactly this with several Gigabyte MA78 boards, the NIC would work with Ubuntu/XP but died after Win7 had been installed and updated.- IE in a multi boot situation it worked in XP and Ubuntu, but not Win7

                        I suspect it is a bad M$ update, but there are so many it is impossible for me to narrow it down to which one (not enough hours in the day).

                        You dont say what replacement NIC you fittted, but I managed to get a very old, generic 10/100 card working perfectly.

                          Try another PCI slot, I have had this problem before.

                          If possible see if the card works in another comp to make sure it's not faulty.
