    Wine on a lappy

I spilled a full glass of red wine on my laptop, I immediately removed the battery and power cable and left if for 24 hours, Upside down.
I tried it again and it started up as normal. Then I heard a small pop and it shut off immediately.
I tried it again, and it started up again, but once again a small pop and off.
I left it another 24 hours, and tried it again and it stayed on for 5 mins, then a pop, and off again.
Now it wont start at all.

It is out of warranty, it is an ACer aspire 5750.

    What should I do?

      Please don't use rice.

I see this with every water damaged phone.. 'I put in in rice for a day like it said on the internet.'
Then I open it up in front of them & shake a load of water out.

Take the laptop apart so you can get to both sides of the motherboard.

      Order some IPA off ebay

Pour/spray the IPA over the board & lightly scrub it with a toothbrush.

Spray it again, then shake off the excess.

Get a hair dryer & dry the whole board.

Look over the board for electrical damage before putting it back together.

Unless you spilt distilled water over it, there will always be residue left to kill componants & bridge tracks.
Unlike the rice myth, IPA will remove any moisture left & evaporate leaving no residue (as long as you sprayed it after scrubbing).
Red wine is loaded with residue.

They wouldn't know what to do with it. Then charge you three times to come back with a report saying it's had something spilt on it.

                Never a truer word spoken

If you're close enough to me I know a PC Tech that can do it. But I fear you're not a Smoggie.
Have words with local retailers (mobile phone & pc related) to find out who to avoid.

You should really be doing this yourself. It's not that hard & buying the IPA will be cheaper than paying for the repair.
At a guess, an independent pc repair shop will charge around ?50 unless parts need replacing. A litre of IPA is around ?9 & you won't need anywhere near a litre.

I should add that you will need to remove the heatsink & processor before spraying. So new thermal paste will also be needed.

If you want to bother then you can send it to me and I will strip it and clean it and see if I can repair the eaten tracks but in my opinion you have left it too long now. Red wine is acid and it will have eaten copper away completely. If you are lucky (1 in 50 or more lucky) you will be able to see the damage adn repair it, it all depends on how much you got in there and where it went. You cannot repair the keyboard if any got in that so you will need a replacement.

MJ, that would be fantastic. I still should have your address from the last time you selflessly helped me out.
I bought a new keyboard a month back, but they aren?t too expensive anyway, so I will get another.
I am back later tonight, so I will send it monday.
I am deeply indebted to you.

Aw Shady ave gotta hand it to you fella, a nearly burst ma corset with that one, that's class, ****in rice.
You do know with the amount of hits DK gets there is probably dozens of guys explaining to their wives about the "Uncle Ben Theory", personally a would chuck a Pot Noodle on it but it has to be Beef and Tomato or the whole idea just sounds stupid.

IPA is king as Canker said, a go through gallons of the stuff these days..
In the good old days it was always Coke but now Fruit Shoots and scented water is more frequent.
Bloody kids, they haven't a clue what we sacrificed, obesity and no teeth and a one year apprenticeship with a ZX Speccy spending a whole day typing to produce a Union Jack that goes beep..
