I'd run malwarebytes and see if it comes up with anything ... sounds a bit like a virus to me.There is no tomorrow..... it's simply two days after yesterday ! -

As Digilox; and yes, replace the built in firewall with a proper one, but which one is best for you depends on you system specs and you tech knowledge.
A good one for the less technical is ZoneAlarm; if you want greater control, or you have an old system that ZoneAlarm slows down too much, I suggest PrivateFirewall7.0Comment

In that case he wouldnt get the warning about the firewall being turned off, Win OS recognises that another firewall is in operation.
IMHO all in one AV/firewall programs are a bad idea. YES they often share a common interface which makes them easier to understand and control BUT this means they often share common flaws; so if some malware manages to find its way through a flaw, it is through onto your machine.
If you have products from different companies they are unlikely to share a common flaw, so an exploit getting through one should still be picked up and blocked by the other.Comment

Not sure what OS you are running Fireblade, if its XP then a would switch to Comodo as recommended, its one of the best firewalls going and its free, XP firewall is pretty dated now.
If its Vista or 7 is there a error message popping up anywhere..
The usual suspect is when people change their anti virus that come with a firewall built in as it switches off Windows firewall to avoid conflicts.
A would try this to get it going again.

Windows XP had a firewall? Hell NO!
That's an application firewall, not a firewall!
Don't install comodo if you don't know the inner workings of it, because it can have unforeseen effects - programs don't work any more, some parts of a program don't work (personal experience)...
Just stick to a simple firewall like ZoneAlarm.Comment

The 2012 antivirus package is much improved mate but a do agree that Comodo does take a bit of effort.
A wouldn't touch any Comodo products a few years back, a always found them a buggy mess that could be dangerous sometimes.
A tried their system cleaner on a old clunker a few years back and it totally corrupted my OS beyond repair for reasons that are still beyond me.
When a reviewed it on the Freeware site i use, i gave them a detailed report of how i set it up etc, it got pulled off the site that day and that was a stable release..
Over the last 2 years though they seem to have made a lot of changes at making their product line more reliable, simple and efficient.
The 2012 av package is probably the lightest i have seen on resources. (MSE probably matches it)
It also come with free support which is a first with free AV's.
