PC will not start up stating "lsass.exe unable to locate component because NTDSAPI.dll was not found" - XP DISK does not get past this message when tryin to boot from cd. Also same message when trying to boot to safe mode. Running XP Pro SP3. Anyone ever come across this before and have a solution they'd like to share ? As all i get is a blank screen with a cursor on it. btw also tried booting with start-up floppy - same outcome.

when you try to reinstall xp did you select the install xp to start with and then at next window select the "repair" option once it has discovered an existing os?

If you do manage to get into the recovery console, try this command...
***amend D:\ to the appropriate drive letter of your CD/DVD drive***Code:expand D:\i386\ntdsapi.dl_ C:\Windows\System32\ntdsapi.dll
If that doesn't work, try...Code:exit
Code:chkdsk /f fixboot fixmbr

No. i can't get to that stage - i try to boot from XP disc but aforemention message comes up - they are no other messages - it just doesn't go any further.

Before you go too far trying to fix this issue which is a tricky one to get by if at all, you could save yourself some time and test your hard disk first (even if it is new). Use some oem diags software from the disk manufacturer, if you disk is dicked you will save yourself hours of playing around...
Such an error is sympomatic of the old sasser virus...
you could download the hiren CD which has loads of diags and fix progs on it...
if you download this cd and test the hard disk and it comes up ok then use the av function, after use the live CD function of it and boot into a live XP enviroment thagt will run out of your ram... If you can get open a dos prompt and try devilfish's tips but on the second part
chkdsk /f <----- run the full scan cycle
and then
chkdsk /r <--- run the full scan cycle
this can take some time so you may want to riun it overnight.. If after this you can get windows to restart scan you drive for malware asap. If your machine does not work you are starting to waste your time and should consider reloading....Last edited by caveman_nige; 10 April, 2009, 01:39.
