laptop wireless problem

Hello

I am really scratching my head with this one.

I have a friend who uses her laptop at work wirelessly, has brought it home to use but connect to internet.

She has a router and the laptop shows she is connected but when she goes to the browser, she gets page cannot by displayed.

The only difference between her laptop and mine is

my address type shows as assigned by DHCP
friends shows manually.

Anyone any ideas? I am still quite a newbie TIA

I think the easiest way is to uninstall your device in device manager, then reboot, and the computer should detect new hardware.. re install. job done

Sorry to appear thick - I know where device manager is but what do i uninstall and how does it re install?

you can get device manager? yeah?
look at network adapters, right click the wireless one.. and the uninstall tab should be there... do it.. re boot
and it should say new hardware detected.. install it auto, the computer finds it..

If it doesnt say new hardware detected, then go to control panel, and add new hardware.. do a search for new hardware..
give it a go... if I have missed something, plenty of more intelligent people to guide you on here.

I have seen cases of this being caused by the TCPIP connection properties, for instance if the laptop connects to the her work LAN using a fixed IP of defined DNS settings she will need to configure alternate configuration using DHCP.

Another reason beyond the TCPIP connection config could be that a proxy server is configured in her browser, her work LAN may use a proxy server for internet access, check the browser connection properties to see if this is configured..

See.. I told ya.. someone more intelligent would sort you out krra...
I put my penworth in Nige, coz I had the same problem with my daughters lappy.. she used it at Uni and then it wouldn't work at my house, I did a lot of googling and this sorted it out for me.
An uninstall and then reboot... windoze reloaded the driver, and it was sorted...
I even had it in the local PC shop for 5 days where they did nowt and wanted ?40 too.. they got nowt.

it would either be a proxy issue (most employers proxy their internet) or a DNS error, some employers run their own nameservers in order to block certain sites and keep a log of traffic.

proxy:
in internet explorer go to tools, internet options, connection.
then select automaticaly configure. restart the browser and voila your now surfing the tubes (you will need to set it back to the correct ip to connect at work however)

DNS:
under your connection settings select TCP/IP and selext properties and make sure get ip automaticaly from dhcp is ticked and it will automaticaly find your ISP's assigned DNS.
again this will need to be changed back to its original ip in order to gain access to the interwebs at work.
