The display card on the laptop would be integrated in the motherboard so you would need to replace the motherboard. If you had to replace the motherboard than that is usually half as much as the cost of new pc. What sort of a problem are you having with your display?

Replacing the internal grahics card on a lappy can be done but its like open heart surgey in most cases.

I think Acus do an external graphics card for connecting to external monitors or tvs via hdmi.

What sort of issues you got with the display?
          Is the screen just blank?
Does the laptop fans start up when powered?

Unfortunatly with lappies, we have two options.

1: it is built into the mobo and therefore is a chip so you cant just unsolder and replace it.

2: It is a seperate graphics card which you can replace, but it isnt easy with a lappie it takes time and patience to do a laptop, write notes as you take it apart, get the specifications from the manudacturer site if you can and find the plans with the blowup diagrams if your very lucky.

Take your time cos if you damage a wire by being rough your lappie is dead

That was my next post chim.

Jusy how old is the lappie? Sure there will be somewhere to replace the gfx but beware if its on the motherboard and they quote a new 1 then it would probably be best buying new lappie.

not to my knowledge you cant get usb/comms graphics.

Best option is probably send it off for repair unless as chim said your good with soldering chips

what kind of lappy is it?

If its MXM compatable then yes. ive upgraded a few laptop graphics cards but its prohibitively expensive:

Nvidia Geforce 8600GT will be around the ?120 mark for the model equiped with 512mb of ddr3

ATI 3650HD with 256mb of ddr3 will set you back around ?170.

Then you need to worry bout spacer placement and cooling...
This of course assumes your mobo is actualy MXM compatable.
The reason for the expense is these are not supposed to be consumer parts and are sold in bulk to laptop manufaacturers, so shops getting hold of them is a rarity.
