is it possible to change a mac id?

The Mac id is issued to every network card which all manufacturers do and no two supposedly are the same and im sure that with the right equipment and software you could change the mAc address of a piece of hardware I have seen the mAc address of broadband modems cloned in the past but why you would want to change it made me curious
Or are you referring to the MAC ID as the name you MacBook has been named
