    PC ram

Hi I showed my dad how to update the ram in his PC as it was running slow (had 2 x 512mb ram sticks) wrote down the type and showed him ones on Amazon, found 2 x 1GB ones.

Anyway he said he has got them fitted, when he boots up nothing,
He put the old ones back in as a temporary measure til I see him next but all he is getting now is 3 beeps, pause 3 beeps etc no boot

What can the problem be? I showed him how to take them out and fit them.

I assume the PC picks up the new ram as that's what I did when I updated my laptop ram???

either a: that mobo cant handle any more than 1gb ram
    or b: that rams knackered.
or c: its the wrong ram
whats the model of mobo? and what ram are you trying to put in?
    Fave replies from various threads

Off the top of my head I can't remember, just copied the old one and put into Amazon.
Why is the old ram causing 3 beeps now? Has he not seated it correctly

        yep probably not seated correctly

download the siw tool and run it on ur dads computer
(it self runs so no installing)

when u have siw running scroll down left hand side to HARDWARE and select MEMORY tab

        let that load

when loaded the first tab should be MEMORY SUMMARY
and this will tell u how many slots u have
the maximum capacity for each slot
and the overall capacity for the board

Sometimes the bios can get confused and may need to be reset, I've seen this happen on desktop motherboards when changing memory.
