        Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications (WinXP)

Bought a used laptop from fleabay, and after updating
to Internet Explorer 8, a WGA message is appearing
        when I boot up.

The Microsoft message is obviously asking if I'd like to
install their software so THEY can check the authenticity of
my copy of Win XP Professional.

News just coming in...... NO! I wouldn't like to install
        Microsoft's snooping software.

However, I've tried to get rid of this message box that
only appears on boot up at this stage, by deleting all the
'start up' program check boxes in MSCONFIG, but to no avail.

Does anyone know of how to easily get rid of this message?

There is a genuine sticker on the base of the laptop
with a key for 'Windows XP Professional'

In saying this I have heard that people have had
problems registering with Microsoft, even when they
        have a genuine key.

If I do inadvertently press that
'NEXT' button, is it possible to register online with
        Microsoft easily enough?

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

          Windows XP

Managed to get rid of the annoyance by deleting
          this folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\KB905474

          Hope it doesn't come back....

There is a pretty simple command you can enter if it does come back it just disables it from ever showing up. Let me know if you need it

Problem is that did u do all your updates yet from microsoft update manually? once you are finish u should enter the command and just auto update to do your updates afterwards..because microsoft update will try to access ur WGA but it won't let it and it will just a do a loop cycle and will just be stuck on microsoft update screen.

Windows XP - updates and WGA

It wasn't me that re-installed the WinXP.
I'll have a look to see what status updates are at.
For the moment I've disabled automatic updates.

                    I'll re-post my findings...

Hey Meat Head does that actually makes windows genuine or only temporarily until you restart. Because I had something like that too it does take away the genuine advantage notification but returns on a restart.

Oh I'm not worried about it returning I was just wondering thats all, Cause I have the same reg. file it does make windows genuine but if you reformat your computer and do the install while connected to the internet the second you restart the WGA notification comes on.

I've figured a way around it already just trying to help others out.
