Toshiba laptop - Windows 8 - loss of desktop

Chaps,

I need some help

My cousin installed "connectify" onto his toshiba laptop (windows 8)
After the installation, the laptop rebooted, but the desktop displayed - gone blank

Tried to run the system restore - he said, that doesnt appear to be working via safemode...

Do you think this needs to be wiped or something else can be done to retrieve the desktop
