    seagate portable hard drive

Hi, has anyone out there had problems with the p.c not recognising these drives. I have a desktop running xp pro and a laptop running vista. Occasionally they pick up the drive, but more often than not they both either don't recognise it or , if they do, report that the drive is corrupted. I have replaced the drive as the first one gave the same problem. I am running Kaspersky internet security 2009 on both computers. any suggestions?

Thanks for the reply - I normally safely remove the drive, but occasionally I have just removed it.

i see you had the same problems with your original drive before you replaced it, i take you occasionally just unplugged that one as well, its possible that drive is being corrupted by you simply unplugging it on the odd occasion, its strange both drives are behaving in the same way.

I think i'll reformat it and then make sure I safely disconnect it every time I use it. Thanks.

as long as there is no clicking sound thats good ^^

if it's corrupted you might have to make another partition check for bad error's that could be causing problems for the hard drive.

you can use recovery console to fix them or tuneup utilties diskdoctor if you have it.

            commands

            chkdsk
            chdsk /f
            chdsk /r

i use seagates as well there the most reliable i think they can cause problems but fixable ones unlike Western Digital ones

            anyway good luck

problems with seagate drives, and maxdor, are far from uncommon. especially if you plug and unplug them (either USB or SATA connection). just type "blue screen" "maxdor", or "seagate", to check, reams and reams of them. there seems to be no, single, solution. but a problem is there. perhaps its down to the number of drives they have out there. but downloading the seagate/maxdor Utilitys, can often solve the problem. unfortunately, not always

If its broke, fix it and use it again!
If it proper broke, use it for something else!

i've had 2 seagate portable hard drives. first 1, the USB port on the drive itself snapped inside. Ended up buying an Akasa caddy to salvage the drive.

2nd 1, hard drive just failed. completely dead. Replaced with a spare desktop HD i had lying around. a few months later, usb port buggered on that too.

Now, ok, i did used to carry it around alot in my bag so maybe it didn't take the best care of it but it was defo a weak point for me. currently have my Asaka and 2 WD 1TB's and had no problems with them. Shame, i used to think really higly of seagate equipment.
