    Vista user account locked?

My supervisor has a home desktop running vista, all the family use it as the same user, one of his daughters put a password on it at the weekend but cant remember what it was. I remember reading that in xp you could go in thru' the command prompt and change the password and was wondering if the same could be done in vista? bear in mind he cant get past the login screen. Or if anyone has an easier/ better way of doing it without the use of password crackers or programs like that.

You should be able to re-boot in safe mode and log in as the built-in
administrator. This account generally doesn't have a password and is only
    available in safe mode.

From there, you can get to User Accounts and change passwords.

When your restart your computer, press F8 right before you see the Windows
splash screen. This will bring up the Advanced Boot Options menu, from which
    you can select Safe Mode.

As for your problem with vista, doing the above will be fine if no admin password as been set, if so you will need a password recovery program for this situation, get back to us and i am sure someone will know 1.

have feedback. he booted in safe mode and tried to log in as admin but it said the admin account is disabled. I asked him to try remove the password in safe mode but it wouldn't allow it. is there a way to enable the admin account ?

the following link tells you how to enable the admin acc in vista, still use safe mode as before and give it a try.

If all fails then you could always look for the ERD Commander cd or Winternals cd and reset the admin password.
