Have you installed any new hardware or software lately. It could be a number of things. Can you boot into safemode and uninstall anything you have installed recently , and do a virus scan.
You can do a system restore in safe mode on xp
To start System Restore using the Command prompt, follow these steps:
1. Restart your computer, and then press and hold F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in safe mode with a Command prompt.
2. Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode with a Command prompt option.
3. If you are prompted to select an operating system, use the arrow keys to select the appropriate operating system for your computer, and then press ENTER.
4. Log on as an administrator or with an account that has administrator credentials.
5. At the command prompt, type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, and then press ENTER.
6. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to a functional state.

Today's report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster.
The panel has quite simply found 'no evidence' in support of allegations of 'exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans' and 'no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium' and 'no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying'. -
Thanks for the quick reply. Yes I have tried safe mode still freezes. Tried enable VGA mode in case it was the video card still no luck. Doent he F8 still froze. The weird thing is that it freezes at different points during the process. The BIOS beep is also a lot longer than normal. Hittin a wall at the moment.Comment

depending on the state of the hard drive it could be the Hard drive, operating system or bad errors on the hard drive and unable to load windows.
if you have another hard drive besides the one with operating system on take it out and try this method to recover the bad errors and restore healthy sectors on the drive.
try putting xp disc in boot the disc
then press R - load recovery console
then press 1 for your account on windows
type password for your account
then the following commands
chkdsk checks disk
chkdsk /r checks during restart
chkdsk /f - forces to check the disk
fixmbr - fix master boot record
hope its helpsLast edited by Reapers; 18 July, 2009, 13:37.Comment

Thanks for the reply reaper. I would of thought nit is a hardware component but dont know which one. I doubt it would be the hard drive reason being even in BIOS settigns it just freezes. without actually accesing the hard drive. It might well be the only thing i suppose i can do is try but could it be anything else like processor ram or motherboard?Comment

Sounds to me like the hard drive and ypu say you have a recovery cd?hi i have a problem with my desktop computer basically it will not start up windows it crashes and freezes before windows starts up i managed to put the recovery cd in and it still freezes when loading any ideas would be great, if you think its the motherboard etc because i do not want to go out and buy a new pc cheers. thank you in advance
If its a copy of windows then boot from it, by setting the bios to boot from cd 1st.
Enter the recovery console by following onscreen prompts.
Once you have logged into the correct windows instal the type the following:
chkdsk /r
Let it run, this will scan the hard drive for any errors and try to fix any.
Also do a little browsin in the forum and you will find a cd called hirens, this will hace all the tools needed to get the hard drive, if possable to a good healthy state.sigpic
