XP pro Networkink ?

Hi guys, i have a laptop and a desktop pc both running xp pro , i want to network them so i connected the 2 with a crossover cable, given my nics ip addresses, set shares on both pc,s, however on tdesktop in my network places i have the desktop computer icon present, but the laptop does not have an icon for the laptop, and when i click on show workgroups it says workgroup currently unavailable, any ideas.....

if you have firewalls installed you will have to configure them to allow the flow of data between the 2pcs.
